Why do ketchup and mustard come in different types of packets!? It makes no sense! They’re usually even made by the same brand! Would it not be cheaper to use one type of packet for both condiments? And why is the mustard packet design so much worse than the one for ketchup? Ketchup packets are nice and easy to open, whereas mustard packets are vindictive little pieces of trash that you cannot easily open without bringing teeth into the equation. There is no elegant way to open a mustard packet. Why must things be this way? It’s absurd! It makes no sense to have two packet designs, especially when the ketchup packet is clearly vastly superior in every way! Why do we put up with this? Why do the packet makers do this to us? Why, if I had a nickel for every time I went without mustard simply because I didn’t want to deal with the mustard packet’s crap, I’d be able to go into business making my own darn packets! I say it’s time we had a condiment packet revolution! Let’s start lobbying the packet companies to change their stupid ways! We shall not put up with this any longer! ... Say, who actually makes these packets anyway?

What you really want are Chic Fila A's Heinz ketchup dipping packets. Or those little paper cups and a dispensary that is always either empty or too full.

There’s a reason for everything. Ketchup (Catsup) comes in a foil packet likely because it is not as stable as mustard, which can be sealed in a cheaper plastic packet. Corporations manufacture things in such bulk, that fractions of a cent in savings equate to significant savings. Even if packaging mustard in plastic instead of foil saves them $200,000 per quarter or year or whatever, they will do it. Also, we don’t know if mustard and ketchup is made even remotely in the same factory or using similar processes. One is made from fruits, suga r and vinegar and the other from seeds and vinegar.
Saying this, I don’t know all this for a fact. It’s just a swag.

If I get condiments at a place with dispensers I usually grab a soft drink lid and fill that - a lot easier to dip in than one of those tiny paper cups even when they’re unfolded . Just put a napkin underneath to stop the leaks from the opening for the straw.

That would make sense... But still no excuse for shoddy packet design! The things should not be that difficult to open, dagna bit!

Counterpoint: I find the serrated edges of the mustard packets adequately do the same job as the ketchup packet “tear here” corner, with the added benefit that I do not have to look for the correct corner to open whist on the go. I can simply reach in the bag by feel, tear from whatever end, and su ck the mustard out of it without taking my eyes from the road. .

Woah... a genuinely useful life hack. Nice!

That’s definitely the best way to get mustard... Seriously, if it’s in the packets, it’s just not worth the trouble. Screw mustard packets.

Well, for all I know, there may be different brands that do packets differently, but the mustard packets used by nearly all restaurants in my area seem to be designed not to ope-
WAIT, YOU JUST SUCK MUSTARD STRAI GHT OUT OF THE PACKET!?

That is so ingenious I might just rip it off you for my own person use. True genius isn't appreciated in its own time, so it may a bit before this catches on.

Ask and you shall receive. Hopefully these cut the mustard. If not, I’ll ketchup to you later with more.
Why did the mustard blush? Because he saw the ranch dressing.
Why was the teacher covered in mustard? She was a sub.
How did the hotdog ask the ketchup out? He mustard up the courage.

If you don’t want to support the condiment packet racket, just b ring your takeout home or to your workplace and squirt it with your personal bottle of your preferred condiment(s). Or drive around with hot sauce in your glove box.

and don’t even get started on the mayo packets or the horsey sauce!
I can’t open those things with a scalpel or a chainsaw. Now the Chinese food guys seem to get where you are coming from, with “duck” sauce and soy sauce in the same sized packages, even if they are too small to cover a single serving

They are made of entirely different material.

I assume you fold in half and then move the fingers to squeeze only on one side, but I’m just an amateur Japanese Sauce Packet Analyst with little intent of going pro.
